Ally Fitzgerald - 112lb National Champion
The Team NY Cadet Women took 2nd place at the Fargo National Championships on Sunday, headlined by national title performances by 112-pound Ally Fitzgerald and 127-pound Mia Macaluso. New York had 13 All-Americans (placing in the top eight), the biggest number of Cadets to make the podium in years.
Locked in a 2-2 tie and losing on criteria, Fitzgerald scored a takedown to win it with only 7 seconds on the clock. She got another turn right before the final whistle to make it 6-2.
“It was very dramatic,” said one of the Team NY coaches, Derek Levendusky. “The atmosphere on that big stage under the lights, streaming live on FloWrestling, for her to do it that way in that moment was incredible. Team NY went wild. No one who was there will ever forget it.”
“It was crazy!” said Fitzgerald. “Everyone back home was really proud of me. My parents couldn’t believe I pulled it off.”
Macaluso battled out a close match for the title with NY teammate Naomi Henry. Macaluso went up early, but after a successful challenge and a flurry of late points by Henry, the final score was 11-8.
Macaluso has had a huge year, winning the Cadet title at Oklahoma Folkstyle Nationals last March and taking 2nd at World Team Trials in May.
“Fargo was a great overall tournament,” said Macaluso. “There were so many great wrestlers I had to face. Wrestling my teammate in the finals was cool, but at the same time not, because I wish we both could have won.”
Other All-Americans: Abby Duke 4th at 94, Riley Dalrymple 3rd at 117, Sofia Macaluso 7th at 122, Naomi Henry 2nd at 127, Natalie Dunn 6th at 127, Grace Pauls 3rd at 132, Tays Pascual 8th at 138, Kai Poux 6th at 152, Katie Moore 4th at 164, Sariah Stewart 6th at 164, and Joanna Jones 4th at 180.
Grace Pauls also won the award for Most Pins.
“Taking 2nd as a team shows how much girls’ wrestling is growing in New York State,” said Sanction NY Task Force member Nikki Macaluso.
