Bergen Catholic's Jacob Cardenas has verbally committed to wrestle for Cornell University in 2019. Big 10 schools Rutgers, Maryland and Indiana were also considered however Cardenas felt Cornell was the perfect fit both academically and athletically.
"I choose Cornell because it gave me everything I wanted. Great academics and great wrestling. I can compete for national championships while getting an Ivy League education. I want a bright future after college and I think Cornell offer that the best way possible. I've been going to camps at Cornell since freshman year and I knew then that I wanted to go there. I know Coach Koll and Dean can make me the person I want to be."
Jacob was his first New Jersey state title in 2018 in dominating fashion with his closest match being a 10-2 major decision in the finals against Sam Wustefeld of Scotch Plains-Fanwood. Cardenas expects to repeat in 2019.
Cardenas isn't the only out of state talent joining the Big Red in 2019. Cornell will be welcoming Julian Ramirez of New Jersey, Phillip Moomey of Nebraska, Mason Reiniche of Tennessee and Colton Yapoujian of Colorado.
