4x NYS Champion Vito Arujau (Syosset HS), who will be a freshman at Cornell next year, won the 61kg weight class the U23 Nationals this past weekend.
Arujau outscored his opponents 90-5. Along the way, Arujau defeated fellow 4x NYS champ and 2017 D1 All-American Nick Piccininni (Ward Melville HS) of Oklahoma St via Technical Fall 10-0.
Penn St. recruit and highly touted Roman Bravo-Young was Aruaju’s opponent in the finals. Arujau defeated RBY 15-4/10-0 to earn the title.
One of the biggest surprises came in the 74kg weight. Buffalo’s Alex Smythe (Eden HS) went 6-0 and defeated 2018 D1 All-American and 3rd place finisher Evan Wick of Wisconsin to earn the title. As many expected, Wick took match 1 with ease winning 7-1. After finding himself down 3-1 in period 2 in the 2nd match, Alex found his rhythm, scoring the final 6 points and taking the second match, 7-3.
The third and final match proved once again that Alex Smythe refuses to quit no matter what the score. In familiar territory, Smythe found himself down 3-0 after 1 and 5-0 late in period 2. The Buffalo Bull somehow pulled it together and reeled off another 6 point outburst and held on to win 6-5.
Youssif Hemida (Mamaroneck HS) of Maryland took the 125kg title. Like Arujau, Hemida soared into the semifinals against another NYS Champion Mike Hughes (Smithtown West) of Hofstra. Youssif hit his stride and the Hofstra senior had no answer. Hemida ended the match with a 12-2 technical fall and was set to face Matt Stencel of Chippewa WC.
Stencel put up a good fight in match 1 however Hemida pulled away in period 2 winning 14-7. Match 2 was all Youssif as he defeated Stencel with an 11-0 technical fall and earning the 125kg U23 title.
