FloNational Recap: Barnes wins National Title

6 New Yorkers earn All-American status

There was a strong contingent of New York high school standouts competing at the FloNationals in Indiana, PA this weekend. 

6 New Yorkers came home with All-American status, led by Ballston Spa senior Tyler Barnes, who won the 170lb national title.

Barnes, who was a Division 1 State Runner-Up this year who will be wrestling at North Carolina State next fall, scored a win over Michigan State Champ and Fargo All-American Ryan Ringler in the semifinals.  Then in the final he won 10-9 over Jared McGill who was 3rd in the PA state tournament.

Fellow NC State commit Matt Grippi finished 6th at 145lbs.  Grippi took a loss in the Round of 16 to PA State Placer Clayton Ulrey, then battled back with 4 straight wins including a win over Fargo All-American Josh Otto of Wisconsin and fellow NY state finalist Kiernan Shanahan of Shendendhowa.  Grippi lost his final two bouts 3-2 and 17-15 to the #1 and #2 seeds.

Shanahan's impressive run was highlighted by a win over PA State Placer Micah Hoffman and a 3-2 loss to NHSCA National Runner-Up Peter Enos.

Johnny Santos of Fox Lane, who was 3rd in D1 this year, scored a big win over Beast of The East Runner-Up Tony Wuest of Delaware to advance to the semifinals before dropping to 6th place.

D2 State Runner Up Jordan Titus of Center Moriches was knocked off early by California middle school phenom Joey Cruz, who went on to finish 2nd.  Titus stormed back with 3 wins in a row to make the all-american rounds.

Rocky Point state runner up Anthony Sciotto knocked off a New Jersey state placer to advance to the quarterfinals and he knocked off an Ohio state placer to advance into the Top 8.
