Diakomihalis highlights New York's performance in Cleveland

A wild weekend in Cleveland for the NCAA Division I Championships put an exclamation point on the 2018 college wrestling season.

New York's 6 Division 1 programs were all in action with wrestlers who qualified for the National Tournament, but the Cornell Big Red were the most impressive with 3 All-Americans, including 3 freshmen.  Most notably was former 4x State Champ from Hilton HS Yianni Diakomihalis who stormed through the 141lb bracket en route to a NCAA Championship.

Diakomihalis knocked off returning champ Dean Heil (Oklahoma State) in the quarters, then won in overtime over #2 seed Jayden Eierman (Missouri) in the semifinals, and finally knocked off top seeded Bryce Meredith of Wyoming in a wild finals match.

Three other New York natives earned All-American honors, including a pair at heavyweight.

Smithtown West product Mike Hughes, wrestling for Hofstra, and Mamaroneck grad Yousiff Hemida of Maryland both placed at 285.

Hughes came in the #11 seed and finished 6th aided by a win over Hemida in the consolation semifinals.  Hemida, who entered as the #12 seed, made a great run to the quarterfinals with an upset over the #5 seed Sam Stoll (Iowa) en route to his 8th place finish.

The final New Yorker to make the podium was Longwood grad Shakur Rasheed who finished 7th at 197lbs helping his Penn State Nittany Lions to the NCAA Team Championship.

Cornell was the highest placing NY team, finishing in the top 10 for the 10th straight year with a 7th place finish.

Cornell rounded out their all-americans with Ben Darmstadt (6th at 197), Jon Jay Chavez (7th at 165), and Max Dean (8th at 184).  All of the Big Red's all-americans return next year.

Hofstra finished 28th despite having just one competitor, as that one was Hughes who earned all-american honors.  Army West Point finished 42nd, just ahead of Columbia in 43rd.  Binghamton was 62nd and Buffalo tied for 65th with 7 other teams that scored no points on the weekend.
