Superior Repeats as Junior High Champs at 1000 Islands Duals

For the second consecutive year, Superior Wrestling Academy captured the Junior High School championship at the 1000 Islands Duals.

The squad was dominant along the way, defeating Penfield, Cellar Dwellers and Doughboy to reach the title bout.

The finals match up was a familiar one -- Superior vs. Cobra. The two squads have met for the Junior High title at this event three times in a row.

While Cobra prevailed in 2015, Superior took the crown in 2016 and last weekend.

“It was a back and forth dual with some really good matches,” coach Ed Schafer said about the finals. “Cobra is a tough team. We had a bunch of guys go undefeated during the tournament. Troy Spratley didn’t get tested the whole weekend - and he competed for the Superior high school team too. He had a big win in the high school competition against [2017 state finalist] Jordan Titus.”

The victorious Superior squad included high school state placers Mason and Marek Bush of Central Valley and NYS qualifiers Carter Schubert of Williamson and Ethan Ferro of Palmyra Macedon.

Schafer believes that many members of the team will make an impact in the NYSPHSAA season … soon.

“We built a team to be in that gold bracket,” Schafer said. “We had a young team with wrestlers to look out for on the high school level in the near future.”
