The New York University wrestling team won two matches at the Mariner Duals, hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy, on Saturday, December 10, in King's Point, NY.
NYU, ranked #15 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll, first defeated USMMA 29-11 before knocking off Nassau County Community College, the 2015-16 National Junion College Athletic Association (NJCAA) champions, 28-12.
"Our guys came out today and wrestled tough," said NYU Senior Assistant Coach Corey Luce. "We looked to put points on the scoreboard every period and we succeeded."
Six diferent grapplers - Anthony Calvano (133 pounds), Evan Drill (141 pounds), Matthew Coppola (149 pounds), Raymond Jazikoff (157 pounds), John Messinger (174 pounds), and Jack La Corte (197 pounds) won their bouts against both USMMA and NCCC.
"Calvano competed the best I've ever seen from him today," added Luce. "Coppola is returning to his old self after missing last season and Jazikoff and Messinger are buzz-saws in our lineup and put up big points today."
- Santino Pelusi earned a victory at heavyweight to close out the win over Nassau.
- Jackson Kligerman shut out his opponent from NCCC at 184 pounds.
- Messinger improved to 17-2 on the season and is undefeated against Division III competition.

On Saturday, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team hosted the 2016 Mariner Duals at the Liebertz Gymnasium. The Mariners welcomed NYU, Division II LIU Post and NJCAA Nassau Community College. USMMA squared off against NYU and LIU Post and lost both matchups – falling to the Violets, 29-11, and to the Pioneers, 23-19.
In the opener against NYU, the Mariners fell behind 20-0 early in action through the 157 weight class. Freshman Joshua Glantzman(Allenwood, N.J.) earned Merchant Marine's first win of the day with an 11-8 decision at 165. After a loss at 174, freshman Kurtis Hahn(Winfield, Mo.) secured five points for USMMA with a technical fall victory at 184. Sophomore Victor Raigoza (Orland, Calif.) finished the match on a good note with a 2-0 decision win at the heavyweight class, but it wasn't enough for the Mariners overall.
After falling behind early yet again in their second match of the day against LIU Post (19-0 through 149), the Mariners came back strong and won five of the last six weight classes over the D-II Pioneers. Sophomore Erik Beshada (South River, N.J.) started it off with a 9-1 major decision at 157, followed by a 2-0 decision victory by Glantzman at 165. Freshman Collin Keil (Whitehouse, Ohio) earned a 7-1 decision at 174 and Hahn followed with his own decision, a 4-2 win, at 184 that made the score 19-13. Post clinched the match with a major decision at 197, but Raigoza notched his second victory of the day with a pin at 6:18 of his bout at heavyweight.

The third-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team continued its dual-meet slate on Saturday afternoon when it traveled to Oswego State for the final meet of 2016. The Bombers pushed their record to 2-0 on the fledgling season, blowing past the Lakers for a 31-9 victory.
Ithaca scored victories in seven of the 10 bouts on the day. The Bombers earned bonus points in five of the seven wins, notching two wins by major decision, one by technical fall, and two additional wins by fall.
Much like IC did on Wednesday night in its opening dual-meet against RIT, the team raced out to fast start in the meet with victories in five straight bouts. The start lifted Ithaca to an insurmountable lead, which ultimately proved to be more than enough to win the meet against the tough Oswego State outfit.
It did not take long for the Bombers to gain the upper hand in the meet, as they took a 6-0 lead out of the first bout of the day courtesy of a first-period pin by Ferdinand Mase. Ithaca's talented sophomore took-on the Lakers' Jack Del Duca at 125 pounds and wasted little time in dispatching his opposition. Mase turned Del Duca to his back to secure the pin-fall in 2:07.
Continuing to wrestle up at 133 pounds, Jimmy Kaishian (7th NWCA, 7th d3wrestle.com) also scored bonus points in his bout against James Ronca. The IC senior shut out Oswego's man in a 9-0 major decision to push Ithaca's lead to 10-0 in the match. Chris Wymer piggybacked on Kaishian's effort with Ithaca's second major decision win of the meet at 141 pounds. He bested Evan Corso in a 9-1 major to up the advantage to 14-0.
Demitri D'Orsaneo doubled up on his impressive season debut on Wednesday with a hard-fought victory in his 149-pound matchup against Oswego's Joey Bush. In a tightly-contested low-scoring battle, D'Orsaneo was able to edge Bush in a 6-5 decision, while Sammy Schneider scored a dominant 20-4 technical fall over the Lakers' Jon Crast at 157 pounds to make the match score 23-0 in favor of the Bombers.
Oswego State battled back with three straight victories at 165, 174, and 184 pounds respectively. However, with all three wins coming by way of decisions, the Ithaca lead proved to be too wide to overcome in the final bouts. Ithaca closed out the match on a high-note with Carlos Toribio scoring a 5-0 decision over Daniel Smith at 197 pounds, while Jake O'Brien also upped his record to 2-0 in dual meets on the year with a third-period victory by fall (5:41) over Ryan Kamer to close out the 31-9 win.
