The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) announced its Regional Coach of the Year would be Ithaca College Head Coach Marty Nichols in the Mid-East Region.
Nichols was selected by other coaches and officials in the Mid-East Region. It was the first year Ithaca has competed in this region and took home the gold at the tournament defeating Stevens Institute of Technology with 145.0 team points.
This is his 22nd year as the coach of the Bombers and led them to a 14-2 record in their regular season averaging 30.6 team points per dual meet. Earlier in the season, the Bombers took 3rd at the Division 3 National Duals in Fort-Wayne, Indiana only losing to #1 ranked Wartburg and defeating #4 ranked Johnson and Wales for 3rd place making it their highest finish in the event ever. Before walking through the Mid-East this past weekend, Nichols led 11 wrestlers to place finished in Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) making it its fifth straight team title.
Coach Marty Nichols not only led wrestlers to victory on the mat, but in the classroom with a team GPA of 3.22 ranking them 12th in the nation academically among Division 3 teams. Seven wrestlers were named NWCA Scholar All-Americans and 15 wrestlers were named to the ECWC All-Academic Team.
The 1989-90 team he wrestled on was also recently inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall-Of-Fame over the winter. Coach Marty Nichols will lead 7 Bombers March 9th, and 10th in Cleveland, Ohio for the Division 3 NCAA Tournament.
