Team Kong United took home the NHSCA National Duals title for the second straight time earlier this summer in Virginia Beach.

This past weekend, the squad added another championship at the 1000 Islands Duals in Clayton.

“What a tournament - it was a great weekend,” said Kong coach Anthony Ciolino. “Two of our guys got sick, so we had to forfeit some weights, but our guys brought it every match and came up with a lot of big wins.”

That was certainly true in the finals against defending champions Superior Wrestling Academy. Kong trailed 23-20 heading into the final three weights, but Jonathan Loew (Wantagh), Elijah Rodriguez (Long Beach) and Peter Acciardi (New Jersey) all bumped up and won, including the last two by major, to secure a 31-23 victory and first place.

Prior to the finals, Kong posted dominant victories over Titan Red (64-12), Central Maine (53-9), Phillipsburg (33-12) and Doughboy (38-12).

“The guys all wrestled like a bunch of champions,” Ciolino said. “We faced tough teams. In the semis, Doughboy had a bunch of hammers, but every single one of our guys won [in the contested matches]. Superior was a very tough team and they’ve won here before. But our guys came through. Anthony Sciotto (Rocky Point) cradled and pinned two-time state champ Orion Anderson in a huge win at 130 pounds. I’m proud of all of the guys. They did an unbelievable job the whole weekend."
