On Friday, Team New York picked up plenty of hardware, crowning two national champions and eight others who earned All-American status in the Men’s Cadet Freestyle competition.
Earning national titles were two multi-time New York State champions, Jacori Teemer and Frankie Gissendanner.
Teemer beat Mason Phillips of Washington, 12-10, in the finals in an exciting finish. During the match, Teemer led 6-1 before giving up eight unanswered points. After securing another takedown in the final minute, Teemer still trailed 9-8. However, in the closing 10 seconds, the Nassau star scored another takedown off a flurry, followed by reversal from Phillips and another quick exposure from Teemer to earn himself a “Stop Sign” for Long Beach. Teemer credited Vougar's Honors Wrestling (VWH) and last week’s training camp with the Cadet World Team for his move up the podium from seventh last year.
Also winning a national title was Penfield’s Frankie Gissendanner at 152 pounds. Gissendanner made some noise in Fargo after his quick and dominating fall in the semis on Thursday afternoon.
The two-time New York State champion brought that momentum into Friday’s finals match, controlling a 9-2 victory over Michael O’Malley of New Jersey. Gissendanner led 5-2 late in the finals match before picking O’Malley up off his feet for a “feet to back” exposure in the closing seconds to earn another title for Team New York.
Tyler Barnes of Ballston Spa also made the championship bout, at 170 pounds, with five straight technical falls. Barnes fell to Travis Wittlake Jr of Oregon in a rematch of Monday’s Cadet Greco finals to earn silver. Barnes is the first double style finalist ever at Fargo for the Journeymen Wrestling Club.
2016 NYS champion Greg Diakomihalis of Hilton finished with bronze at 106 pounds. Diakomihalis earned his way to the podium with four technical falls and three decisions.
Also in the 106 pound bracket, Dylan Ryder of Half Hollow Hills West landed a spot on the medal stand with an eighth place finish. Ryder met Diakomihalis in the wrestlebacks, where he lost 2-2 on criteria.
A trio of New York wrestlers took sixth place, including two-time NYS champion Adam Busiello at 113 pounds. Busiello, who was battling an illness, got to the semifinals with five straight wins before losing his next two matches by technical fall and then injury defaulting to sixth.
Also finishing in sixth place were Kiernan Shanahan of Shenendehowa and Jacob Logan of New Rochelle. Shananan outscored his first three opponents 47-34 before dropping his quarterfinals match to the eventual champion Brock Hardy of Utah. He bounced back with another exciting win, 14-12, followed by a fall in the wrestle backs at 138 pounds.
Jacob Logan joined Barnes as a double All-American after finishing in fourth place in Cadet Greco on Monday. Logan finished with a 6-3 record in the Freestyle competition and a 12-5 record on the week at 160 pounds.
Jayson Gomez of Eagle Academy notched seventh at 285 pounds with four falls, while Terry Adams of Monsignor Farrell also earned All-American honors with an eighth place showing at 100 pounds. Adams lost his first match before winning six straight in the wrestlebacks to earn a spot on the podium.
Team New York finished in 3rd place in Cadet Freestyle competition and Rick Gumble was also awarded 2016 Person of the Year.
Men’s Junior Freestyle Update: Kevin Parker advanced to the national finals at 182 pounds on Saturday where he will face Owen Webster of Minnesota. Also earning All-American honors again for Team New York was Brandon Nunez at 100 pounds. Stay tuned for an update on the final day of wrestling tomorrow.
