A wrestler we thought would be a podium threat last season was Anthony Sobotker of North Babylon, an NHSCA All-American in 2015 (fourth at 126), who suffered an injury that kept him off the mat a year ago.
Jonathan Loew of Wantagh, a state qualifier as an eighth grader, and Elijah Rodriguez of Long Beach both won NYS Freestyle and Greco Roman titles this spring.
Earning All-American honors at the NHSCA Nationals this year were Jake Croston of Mount Sinai at 195 pounds and Deonte Wilson of Amityville at 220. Wilson, a state qualifier this season, took third in Virginia Beach. The talented Antonio Cutrie of Chittenango defeated Croston this year.
Previous NHSCA placers from 2015 include Joey Brillo of Skaneateles, Chance Lapier of AuSable Valley, Maguire Horl of Garden City, Halil Gecaj of John Jay Cross River and Andrew Fenner of Minisink Valley.
Jake Cook of Ballston Spa placed at the UWW Cadet Nationals after taking second in Section 2 during the high school season behind state champ Kevin Parker of Shenendehowa.
Tim Nagosky (Smithtown West) went undefeated for Team New York at the Cadet Freestyle National Duals.
